Things to do

Historic houses, traditional inns, craft shops, lake cruises, hill walking, mountain biking, county shows; the list of things to do in the Lake District is endless. To give you some ideas, here are a few of our suggestions for great days out.

Grizedale forest has much to offer and is only a short drive away from Graythwaite. Dedicated walking and mountain biking routes, sculptures by artists such as Andy Goldsworthy and Richard Harris - and don’t miss Go-Ape, an exhilarating three hours spent navigating through the tree-tops using swings and bridges.

Another nearby attraction is the nostalgic ride from Haverthwaite to Bowness/Ambleside. The first leg, from Haverthwaite Steam Railway to Lakeside, is by steam train. The mode of transport then switches to a scenic cruise up Lake Windermere with drop-offs at Bowness or Ambleside. If you fancy some shopping then Ambleside, as well as being a beautiful place to visit, has a great selection of craft shops, cafes and outdoor clothing shops.

Something more cultural? Dove Cottage in Grasmere was Wordsworth’s family home for over 8 years and now has a museum dedicated to the great poet. The village is also famous for its gingerbread. The recipe for this unique treat is a closely guarded secret, kept locked away in the National Westminster Bank in Ambleside!

If fishing is your thing, you may fly fish free of charge on our own secluded tarn which is stocked with rainbow trout. Esthwaite water is 3 miles away and is run as a fishery; from here you can hire boats and equipment, or even learn to fish. Whether you’re a first-timer or an expert angler, you’ll find something to suit.

Beatrix Potter’s home at Hill Top is only 3 miles away and provided inspiration for many of her tales. Her house has remained relatively untouched and it gives an insight into how Beatrix lived her life and created her stories. Like many visitors to the area, Beatrix fell in love with the Lake District and eventually made it her home.

Nearby towns include Ulverston (11 miles) and Hawkshead (4 miles). Ulverston is a busy market town and has been labeled Cumbria’s Festival town with Dickensian Weekend, Ulverston Carnival and the Lantern Procession to name but a few. Aside from the festivities, there is also a weekly Thursday market, which continues the tradition of the market charter, granted in the 13th century.

Hawkshead is a picturesque village with many historic buildings and quaint courtyards. It’s rich history includes important connections with William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter; both have museums dedicated to them in the village.
